WOCAT (World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies) is an established global network of Soil and Water Conservation (SWC) specialists, dedicated to sustainable land management (SLM). In response to the need to formalise the to date informal global network a Framework Agreement defining the WOCAT Network as WOCAT International, and WOCAT Regional and National, is currently under development.

The overall goal of the WOCAT Network is to unite the efforts in knowledge management and decision support for up-scaling SLM among all stakeholders including national governmental and non-governmental institutions and international and regional organizations and programmes. The network provides tools that allow SLM specialists to identify fields and needs of action, share their valuable knowledge in land management, that assist them in their search for appropriate SLM technologies and approaches, and that support them in making decisions in the field and at the planning level and in up-scaling identified best practices.

The WOCAT strategy for the period 2008-2012 (extended to 2013) is the product of experience gathered in the World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies (WOCAT) programme since its inauguration in 1992. It is a result of internal evaluation and consultation on the future of the programme, in which all partners were involved.

WOCAT’s vision is that land and livelihoods are improved through sharing and enhancing knowledge about sustainable land management.

WOCAT’s mission is to support innovation and decision-making processes in sustainable land management (SLM), particularly in connection with soil and water conservation (SWC).

This is done by:
- connecting stakeholders,
- analysing and synthesising experiences and setting direction,
- enhancing capacity and knowledge,
- developing and applying standardized tools for documenting, monitoring, evaluating,
- sharing and using knowledge.
