For over 30 years the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development (NFSD) has served as a competence centre for corporate responsibility and international health focused on disadvantaged people in developing countries. The NFSD is particularly committed to the realization of the health-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by helping to improve access to healthcare, strengthen human resources in healthcare and empower vulnerable groups.
The Novartis Foundation operates in three overlapping fields: health-related projects in developing countries, think-tank activities (research, analysis and publications), and dialogue and networking.
A number of programmes that the NFSD support include research components for example, causal analysis on access obstacles or outcome measurements of interventions. Among them are the ACCESS Malaria Project (Tanzania), the Patient-Centred TB Treatment (Tanzania) and the Regional Psycho-Social Support Initiative for Children affected by HIV/AIDS, conflict and poverty (Southern and Eastern Africa). Research work is always based on partnership with locally based research organisations.
The NFSD has an annual budget of approximately CHF 10 million which is fully funded by Novartis. However it operates independently from the commercial day to day business of the company.
As a foundation we do not issue grants, that is to say we participate actively in the implementation of the health initiatives we support by lending both financial and technical assistance. Therefore we do not accept unsolicited project proposals.
At present, we are engaged in eight main projects and programs in sub-Saharan Africa and on the Indian subcontinent.
