The WHRC of the University of Applied Sciences of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) is a centre of competence specialized in interdisciplinary research on environmental, socio-economic, technical and cultural dimensions of the built environment in developing countries.
 
With an interdepartmental and multi-disciplinary approach, the WHRC deals with topics such as sustainable development, post-disaster reconstruction, water and sanitation, social housing, resettlement, sustainable building technologies, and renewable energy.
 
WHRC researchers have extensive experience in international development and humanitarian aid and cover disciplines such as architecture, environmental engineering, urban planning, anthropology and public health.
 
The WHRC is dedicated to applied research, consultancies, policy advocacy, education and training in partnership with academic institutions, public and private agencies, NGOs and community organizations. The WHRC conducts independent research in partnership with universities and research centres in the south and carries out consultancies for public and private organizations.
 
The WHRC collaborates with international organisations such as the Global Fund for Disaster Risk Reduction, the World Bank, FAO, the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation, the Swiss National Science Foundation, KFH, REPIC, Swiss Solidarity, Misereor, and i-Rec, the International Network for Research and Information on Reconstruction.
 
Today, the WHRC is consolidating its position as highly qualified and experienced centre of competence and research for sustainable development of the built environment in low-, middle- and high-income countries. The WHRC besides is expanding its activities to other regional contexts such as Haiti and Argentina.
