The University of Ghana was originally established as the University of the Gold Coast in 1948. It was established to provide university education through teaching and research.
 
Training:
The Department of Economics is found within the School of Social Sciences, College of Humanities. It has an undergraduate programme, two Masters programmes (M. Phil in Economics and M.A. in Economic Policy Management) and a PhD. Programme.
 
Research:
Lecturers of the Department of Economics regularly engage with government agencies and departments to provide economic advice and research support. Staff of the department have expertise in a wide range of areas including international trade theory and policy, labour economics and employment policy, migration and remittances, development finance,
environmental policy, poverty analysis and gender analysis. They collaborate with researchers from other universities both in and outside of Ghana.
