The “INSTITUT NATIONAL DE LA STATISTIQUE” (INSTAT) of Madagascar was established on 25th November 1947. Its name has changed for fourth time : Service Statistique Général (SSG)  in 1947, Institut National de la Statistique et de la Recherche Economique (INSRE) in 1964, Banque des Données de l’Etat (BDE) in 1985 and finally Institut National de la Statistique INSTAT in 1994. Its Director General is M. Ravelomanantsoa Paul Gérard. INSTAT is classified as a public establishment with administrative and financial autonomy. Currently, the tutoring of the Institute is attributed to the Ministry of the Economy and Plan (MEP).
The mission of the INSTAT is to deal with statistic analysis and to hold the necessary studies in order to make the tools of decision-making available to government and others statistics users . INSTAT produces statistics, analysis and studies on employment, human capital, poverty, health, education, governance, price, demography, national account. Almost directors and cadres in INSTAT are statistician-economist ingeneers, whose some of them have their PhDs.
The INSTAT offers possibilities to students on master degree to follow training in its different departments. PhDs candidates from the department of economy and management in University of Antananarivo work with the r4 project for Madagascar. These students are specialized on econometrics. On 2010, the INSTAT, in collaboration with National High School on Statistics of Côte d'Ivoire created the first and only one high school on statistics in Madagascar training intermediate level of statisticians.
The INSTAT produce research papers with universities and research centers (University of Witwatersrand in South of Africa, Cornell University USA, DIAL France, Center of Excellence - UNEGI Mexico, University of Bern and Geneva Switzerland, Michigan University USA). Research papers are mainly focused on poverty, labor market, governance and agriculture.
