The Papua New Guinea Institute of Medical Research is a world class research facility looking at ways to improve the health of the people of Papua New Guinea.

The Papua New Guinea Institute of Medical Research:

- employs around 550 people
- is a statutory body
- is funded by the Papua New Guinea Government
  and other donors
- began work in Goroka in 1968
- has laboratories and offices in Alotau, Goroka,
  Madang, Maprik, Port Moresby and Wewak
- has further study sites in Hides-Tari, Hiri West
- targets malaria, pneumonia, filariarsis, respiratory
  disease, sexual health, malnutrition, maternal health
- is the independent research arm of the Papua New
  Guinea Department of Health
- is governed by a 6-member Council.

The institute has five research sections:

- Infection and Immunity
- Vector Borne Diseases
- Population, Health and Demography
- Sexual and Reproductive Health
- Environmental and Emerging Diseases.
