The department of Agricultural Extension was established in 1962 and has been imparting education and training to the students and field officers of various nation-building departments since its existence. This department offers both undergraduate & postgraduate degree programmes including Ph.D. degree. During the last 49 years, 287 students have completed their M.Sc. (Hons.) Degrees. The department started Ph.D. programme in the discipline of Agricultural Extension in 1996 and up till now 25 students have completed their Ph.D. degrees in the discipline of Agricultural Extension. At present, 10 students are pursuing their Ph.D., 53 students their M.Sc. and 81 are pursuing their B.Sc. degree programme. Besides this, the department offers introductory and deficiency courses to the students of various faculties of the university at both undergraduate and post graduate levels.

The faculty of the department has published about 26 books in both English and Urdu languages. Eleven chapters have been contributed in various national and international books. In addition to these publications, 201 research papers, 132 popular articles and various pamphlets have been published in various national and international reputed journals, magazines and newspapers.

The department undertakes from time to time field extension projects in the adjoining rural communities of the University in order to develop linkages between farmers and the department. The students are being sent to the villages for practical application of the principles and techniques learnt in the classroom to farmers’ fields. The department also makes use of radio to disseminate agricultural information among the rural masses on regular basis.

In addition to the usual educational and research activities, the faculty of this department provides short duration training to the pre-release army personnel, officers of various governmental departments such as Agriculture, Forestry, Livestock, and various Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). The faculty members undertake research on various aspects of agricultural extension like needs assessment of extension clientele, assessment of competencies of extension field staff, identification of problems in extension administration, adoption of agricultural innovations, and evaluation of various extension projects. So far, the faculty has completed six funded research projects while three funded projects are in progress.
The teaching staff of the department also provides consultancy services to various organizations involved in the venture of rural development.
